One Sharjah restaurant is providing a welcome respite from the sweltering desert heat as the summer solstice approaches.
Refreshing Relief Amid Summer Heat
As summer's scorching desert heat escalates with the arrival of the summer solstice, one restaurant in Sharjah has devised a refreshing solution. Babu Murugan, the proprietor of Madurai Restaurant in Abu Shagara, has announced a new initiative starting on Saturday, June 22: free buttermilk will be offered to all visitors between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Buttermilk's Nutritional Benefits
This promotion will continue throughout the summer season. Murugan explained his motivation behind the gesture, emphasizing the relentless nature of summer heat and his desire to assist the community in staying cool and hydrated. He highlighted buttermilk as a traditional and nutritious beverage that replenishes electrolytes lost through sweating, offering both refreshment and relief from the fatigue commonly experienced in hot weather.
Inspired by charitable initiatives across the UAE, where cold drinking water is provided through public water coolers, Murugan opted for buttermilk due to its electrolyte-rich composition and health benefits. Contrary to its name, buttermilk contains no butter and has a lower fat content compared to regular milk. It is a versatile fermented dairy product similar to kefir, favored for its cooling properties.
The timing of this initiative coincides with the summer solstice on June 21, marking the peak of summer temperatures in the country. Murugan, originally from Madurai in Tamil Nadu, India, hopes that his gesture will inspire others to consider ways to support their communities during the harsh summer months. He views this initiative as a small yet impactful step towards improving the well-being of people enduring the heat.
In a separate act of community service in Sharjah, 68-year-old Pakistani resident Mohammad Dawood continues his longstanding tradition of distributing free bottled water on weekends. Dawood, known for his generosity, began this practice four years ago and remains committed to keeping his community hydrated, despite facing health challenges.
Previously operating a food trolley outside his beachfront villa on Al Montazah Road, Dawood now distributes water bottles from his car due to health limitations. Despite the change in logistics, Dawood's dedication to helping others remains unwavering. His acts of kindness have fostered a heartwarming connection with the community, as strangers often visit his home seeking water after witnessing his ongoing efforts over the years.
Both Murugan and Dawood exemplify the spirit of community service and compassion in Sharjah, where their initiatives provide relief and support to individuals enduring the harsh summer conditions. These gestures underscore the importance of collective efforts in addressing community needs and promoting well-being during challenging times.
