The emirate announced a ban on single-use Styrofoam products, including cups, lids, plates, beverage containers, and food receptacles.
For Mohammed Anwar, proprietor of Dallas restaurant, which is located in the Zahiya neighborhood of Abu Dhabi, polystyrene cups have been an integral component of his establishment ever since it first opened its doors in 1984. On the other hand, he has gradually withdrawn these mugs from his shop over the past three years.
The authorities informed us that pouring hot items into these cups could potentially release dangerous substances. As soon as we became aware of this, we began the process of gradually eliminating them from our operations.
Abu Dhabi decides to ban Styrofoam.
Abu Dhabi has made the decision to prohibit the use of Styrofoam.
On Tuesday, the city of Abu Dhabi announced that it will begin a ban on single-use Styrofoam items on June 1. These products include cups, lids, plates, beverage containers, and food receptacles. The project is a continuation of the Abu Dhabi Single-Use Plastic Policy, and it lends support to the objectives of the Year of Sustainability.
On the other hand, Anwar acknowledged that the substitution of Styrofoam cups had a financial impact on his establishment. It was his assertion that "Styrofoam containers and utensils are very inexpensive." In comparison, all of its replacements, such as paper cups, plates, and aluminum containers, are significantly more expensive than the original. We have already stopped using them, and we have adjusted our rates to reflect this change over the past few years. However, tiny cafeterias in isolated locations that have continued to use Styrofoam will be required to boost their costs if they move to alternatives.
Satheesh Kumar, the managing director of Notebook restaurant, praised the decision and referred to it as a step in the right direction.
According to him, "it has been a number of years since we first began using paper cups and other alternatives." Due to the ongoing shift away from Styrofoam, the UAE market currently offers a wide variety of Styrofoam alternatives.
Coolers, reusable storage boxes, and items intended for use in medical settings are among the goods exempt from the new restriction. According to Anwar, the majority of Styrofoam is used in food containers. Many restaurants use these boxes to package their sandwiches and burgers, the individual explained.
As stated by Ranees Najmi, managing partner of E-Duniyavu restaurant, a growing number of people are opting to use aluminum and paper boxes for the packaging of these things. He clarified that paper wrapping, akin to fast-food restaurant packaging and potentially branded with the businesses' names, serves as an alternative. This is something that a lot of eateries have considered investing in for their burgers and sandwiches.
