Dubai's Metro service is set to significantly expand in the coming years following the approval of a development plan by the emirate's Executive Council.
Expansion of Dubai's Metro Service
The expansion will see the current 64 stations over 84 square kilometers grow to 96 stations over 140 square kilometers by 2030. By 2040, the network is expected to cover 140 stations over 228 square kilometers. This ambitious plan aligns with the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum.
The expansion aims to increase the share of public transport to 45%, reduce carbon emissions to 16 metric tons per capita, improve the quality of public spaces to encourage walking, and increase shaded areas. These goals are part of a broader strategy to develop areas around Metro stations, enriching economic opportunities, enhancing the interconnection of public transport modes, and improving the efficiency and convenience of sustainable transport. The plan also includes incentives for developers and services to support the '20-minute city' concept, aiming to increase the number of commuters.
Foreign Direct Investment Plan
In conjunction with the Metro development plan, the Executive Council has approved the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Development Program. This initiative aims to attract AED650 billion ($177 billion) in investments to Dubai by 2033. The program, which will allocate AED25 billion ($6.8 billion) over 10 years, seeks to attract international companies and support the expansion of those already based in Dubai. The FDI program will leverage Dubai's competitive advantages, such as its advanced logistics infrastructure, strategic geographical location, and skilled talent pool, reinforcing its position as a global commercial hub.
Dubai's Economic Model
The Executive Council has also approved the Dubai Economic Model, designed to measure Dubai's development against its economic targets. In order to boost investor and consumer confidence, this model incorporates an economic database with more than three thousand indicators. Sheikh Maktoum emphasized that the success of any economic model starts with empowering individuals, as they are the ultimate beneficiaries. Dubai's diverse global city status, combined with its commitment to core values and national identity, is reflected in initiatives aimed at achieving the goals of Dubai's Social Agenda 33. This agenda focuses on fostering happy, strong, and tolerant families who are proud of their values and identity.
For UAE nationals, the Executive Council has approved the 'Manbar' program, which aims to double the number of Emiratis working in mosques and equip them with necessary skills and qualifications. This includes delivering prayers, performing the call to prayer, and conducting Friday prayers. Participants will receive comprehensive training and opportunities to sponsor and train students for permanent appointments, with thorough evaluations conducted before and after graduation.
The 'Ghras Al Khair' program has been launched to empower Emirati content creators and promote values of tolerance, harmony, cohesion, and moderation, thereby strengthening national identity. Schools and universities will offer programs and awareness campaigns to support this initiative. This program aims to engage the younger generation in promoting cultural values and fostering a strong sense of national pride.
