India reports 375 New COVID cases as infection rates increase with cold weather

Asma Ahmed - | World

The health ministry of India reported 375 new cases of coronavirus, while the number of active infections decreased to 3,075. Within the previous twenty-four hours, two fatalities have been documented in the state of Karnataka.

India's COVID Update

India's health ministry reported 375 new cases of COVID-19, signaling a continued decrease in daily infections. The total number of active cases has now dropped to 3,075, reflecting a positive trend in the country's battle against the virus.

Two deaths in Karnataka

Within the past 24 hours, Karnataka recorded two deaths related to COVID-19, underscoring the importance of ongoing vigilance and measures to curb the impact of the virus.

Evolving Situation Since December 5

While daily cases had diminished to double digits by December 5, a subsequent surge occurred, attributed to the emergence of a new variant and the onset of colder weather conditions. Notably, the maximum single-day rise of 841 new cases on December 31, 2023, represented only 0.2% of the peak cases reported in May 2021.

Active Cases and Home Isolation

Currently, the majority of active cases (approximately 92%) are undergoing recovery through home isolation, indicating that severe cases requiring hospitalization are on the decline.

Assessment of the JN.1 Variant

The available data suggests that the JN.1 variant is not causing an exponential increase in new cases, nor is it contributing to a surge in hospitalization and mortality. This analysis provides a reassuring perspective on the impact of the variant on the overall COVID scenario.

India's COVID Waves and Past Peaks

India has experienced three distinct waves of COVID-19, with the delta wave peaking during April–June 2021. The highest daily new cases and deaths were recorded on May 7, 2021, with 414,188 cases and 3,915 deaths.

Overall pandemic statistics

Since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020, India has reported over 4.5 crore COVID-19 infections and witnessed more than 5.3 lakh deaths. On a positive note, the country has seen a substantial recovery rate, with over 4.4 crore individuals successfully recuperating from the disease.

Vaccination Milestone

India has achieved a significant milestone in its vaccination efforts, with a total of 220.67 crore COVID vaccine doses administered across the country.
