India Launches E-Gates for International Arrivals at 21 Airports

Asma Ahmed - | World

In a landmark move aimed at enhancing the travel experience for Indian nationals and OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cardholders arriving at Delhi airport, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Fast Track Immigration—TTrusted Traveler Programme (FTI-TTP) at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Enhanced immigration facilities for Indians and OCI cardholders at Delhi Airport

This initiative, the first of its kind in India, introduces advanced amenities to streamline immigration procedures through automated e-gates.

The primary goal of the FTI-TTP is to provide efficient, secure, and hassle-free immigration clearance for international travelers. By deploying automated e-gates, the program seeks to reduce human intervention during the immigration process, ensuring smoother transitions for passengers.

During the inauguration event, Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized that the FTI-TTP facility will be accessible to all passengers without any additional cost, aiming to make international travel more accessible and convenient for Indian citizens and OCI cardholders.

Implementation Phases and Coverage

The FTI-TTP will be rolled out in two phases across 21 major airports in India. Initially, in phase one, the program will cater to Indian citizens and OCI cardholders. Subsequently, phase two will extend the benefits to foreign travelers.

Apart from Delhi airport, the FTI-TTP will be launched at seven other major airports in the first phase: Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, and Ahmedabad. This nationwide implementation aims to standardize and enhance immigration services across key international gateways in India.

Operational Process

To participate in the FTI-TTP, travelers must register online via the designated portal and submit the necessary documents for verification. Once approved, they will be included in a White List of 'Trusted Travelers' eligible to use the e-gates for expedited immigration clearance.

Upon arrival at the airport, registered passengers will scan their boarding pass at the e-gates to retrieve flight details. Simultaneously, their passports will be scanned for identity verification, and biometric data will be authenticated to ensure security and accuracy.

Once the authentication process is completed successfully, the e-gate will open automatically, granting the passenger seamless immigration clearance without the need for manual intervention.

The introduction of the FTI-TTP marks a significant advancement in India's efforts to modernize immigration facilities and enhance the overall travel experience for its citizens and international visitors. By leveraging automated e-gates, the program not only prioritizes efficiency and security but also underscores India's commitment to facilitating smooth international travel operations.

The implementation of the FTI-TTP reflects India's proactive approach towards modernizing its immigration infrastructure to meet global standards. By introducing advanced technologies such as automated e-gates, the program not only enhances operational efficiency but also contributes to reducing wait times and congestion at immigration checkpoints. This initiative is expected to significantly improve the overall passenger experience, positioning India as a preferred destination for international travelers seeking seamless and secure entry processes. As the FTI-TTP expands to more airports and phases, it is poised to play a pivotal role in transforming the travel landscape, fostering smoother transitions, and reinforcing India's commitment to advancing travel facilitation and security measures.
