Urgent UAE: Opening date for the new passenger terminal at Abu Dhabi Airport

Abdallah Shahin - | UAE

In accordance with the significant progress observed in the aviation industry in Abu Dhabi, the Emirati capital is making preparations to unveil the most extensive expansion of the new passenger terminal at Abu Dhabi International Airport. This airport currently accommodates up to 45 million passengers on an annual basis and has the capacity to process procedures for 11,000 passengers per hour when operating at maximum capacity.

The Abu Dhabi Airports Group has announced its plans to inaugurate a state-of-the-art facility at the international airport in early November. This new structure is expected to significantly enhance the aviation sector, which is seeing fast growth in the emirate.
The inauguration of the facility is a notable accomplishment that helps to the enhancement of the emirate's aviation system and its increasing status as a favoured destination for travellers. Additionally, it serves to strengthen its global hub for trade and commerce.
The inauguration of the new building is of significance as it coincides with Saudi Arabia's efforts to enhance its competitiveness in the tourism sector, particularly in relation to the Emirates. This endeavour is accompanied by the development of a new airport in the capital city of Riyadh and the establishment of an international airline.

The designated location is Passenger Terminal A.

As reported by the Emirates News Agency, Passenger Terminal A is furnished with state-of-the-art technological advancements, encompassing a range of interconnected biometric solutions and systems. These advancements facilitate travellers in availing the expeditious and seamless digital journey experience, encompassing pre-travel procedures and the departure gate. Passengers have the option to independently check in using self-service kiosks, navigate through streamlined security checks, and utilise advanced baggage handling equipment.
The recently constructed passenger terminal spans an impressive size of 742 thousand square metres, positioning it among the largest passenger terminals globally.
The addition of the new facility will enhance the overall capacity of Abu Dhabi International Airport, encompassing both passenger and cargo operations.

The International Design Awards (IDA) is a prestigious competition that recognises excellence in the field of design on a global scale.

The new building has garnered numerous worldwide design accolades due to its distinctive architectural features, positioning it as a notable cultural icon in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. This recognition stems from its successful integration of contemporary design elements, subtle embellishments, and exceptional operational performance. The utilisation of outside glass also facilitates the augmentation of natural light penetration into the expansive interior of the structure.
The structure incorporates lighting options that are very energy-efficient, as well as innovative systems for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Additionally, sustainable building materials are utilised, aligning with the United Arab Emirates' aspirations and objectives in the realm of sustainability.
The installation of a photovoltaic system on the roof of Terminal A's parking lot is a clear demonstration of Abu Dhabi Airports' dedication to minimising its operational carbon emissions. This system operates a photovoltaic solar energy plant with a capacity of three megawatts, effectively neutralising approximately 5,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually.
