UAE Police: An important warning to vehicle drivers regarding these violations

Abdallah Shahin - | UAE

On their everyday commutes, drivers saw that some vehicles were being careless, with the most common example being when drivers were passing too closely, particularly on the shoulder. While some noticed that some drivers drove very slowly, particularly on highways, others demanded harsher punishment for offenders. In order to prevent an accident, the driver may resort to rapid forced overtaking, which is caused by this.

The Abu Dhabi Police Department kept an eye out for drivers whose careless actions caused major collisions. The dangers of improper overtaking, overtaking from the shoulder, or overtaking in forbidden areas (such as bridge entrances and exits) were warned of.

According to Abu Dhabi Police Major Khaled Obaid Al Dhaheri, drivers put themselves and others at risk in fatal traffic accidents when they overtake improperly, whether from the right or the shoulder of the road. He emphasized the need of keeping the road clear at all times.

As part of the "You Comment" initiative, the Abu Dhabi Police and the Monitoring and Control Centre have broadcasted video clips of people violating the no passing zone. The police explained that the no passing zone is specifically for emergency vehicles so that they can get to accident sites faster, treat the injured, and potentially save lives.

The drivers' agreement that improper overtaking causes traffic jams and major accidents—caused by drivers' failure to anticipate and respond to vehicles approaching from behind or to the right—highlights the need for stricter traffic control measures and increased public awareness of the gravity of this offense.

According to driver Karim Sayed, some drivers unknowingly fall into the trap of wrong overtaking when they are startled, for example, by a slow-moving vehicle in front of them on a highway where the speed limits reach 140 kilometres per hour, and react by changing lanes. Trying to outrun it by speeding, however they can be oblivious to the car in the passing lane, leading to a disastrous collision.

In agreement, Tamer Ahmed said that some drivers still won't move from the left lane—the overtaking lane—even when they're going slower than the speed limit. This causes other drivers to take the shoulder or the center of the road to pass the car ahead of them—both of which are illegal and unacceptable behaviors. Motor Vehicle Code, highlighting that drivers have an obligation to yield to oncoming traffic when in the left lane.

"Abu Khaled" acknowledged that some drivers misbehave when it comes to improper passing, particularly in heavy traffic or after an accident has stopped traffic. He cautioned that when traffic stops because of an accident, drivers should use the shoulder to pass. This would prevent accidents that block ambulances from getting to the scene of the accident, and he called for stronger penalties and control measures for disobedient drivers.

According to the Abu Dhabi Police, drivers should not risk everyone's safety by cutting onto other drivers' lanes from the shoulder of the road. The shoulder is only used in times of extreme need, when vehicles like police cars, ambulances, and civil defense vehicles need to get to where they're going quickly.

Article 42 of the Federal Traffic Law, she said, makes "overtaking on the shoulder of the road" a 1,000 dirham and six points infraction.

She emphasized that passing on the shoulder endangers the lives of drivers and passengers because that area was intended for use in times of crisis to facilitate the rapid passage of ambulances, the conveyance of the ill and injured, and the provision of humanitarian aid; it was also intended to provide expedited passage for civil defense and police vehicles to execute emergency services. Also, time-sensitive ones that let them respond to accidents, treat casualties, and keep funds safe. Internal and external roads have been subject to stricter traffic controls by the appropriate authorities in an effort to deter people from trespassing on the shoulder of the road, educate the public about the risks of doing so, and ensure that emergency vehicles like ambulances, civil defense vehicles, and police cars are able to do their vital and lifesaving work unimpeded.

Members of the Abu Dhabi Police Force:

• Drivers put themselves in danger of deadly traffic accidents when they overtake improperly, whether from the right or the shoulder.
