The flight was rerouted to Panama City's Tocumen International Airport, a diversion that took approximately 30 minutes. However, upon landing, emergency responders could only confirm the pilot's passing.
In a statement, Latam Airlines Group acknowledged the tragic incident: "On August 14th, Latam Airlines Group reports that flight LA505, traveling from Miami to Santiago, was forced to make an emergency landing at Tocumen International Airport in Panama due to a medical situation involving one of the cockpit crew members. Sadly, the pilot did not survive despite the efforts of medical services after landing.
Upon the occurrence of the incident, a relief captain and a first officer promptly assumed control of the aircraft's cockpit, ensuring the safety and stability of the flight, according to additional reports.
Latam Airlines emphasized the strict adherence to essential safety protocols throughout the situation and expressed regret for the unavoidable delay, extending an apology to affected passengers. The flight operations resumed the following day, culminating in a 4 am landing at Santiago.
