UAE Implements Preventive Measures to Mitigate Balcony Accidents in Summer

The Sharjah Prevention and Safety Authority has outlined preventive measures to mitigate balcony accidents, given the frequent incidents of falls, fires, and other mishaps.

The Sharjah Prevention and Safety Authority has taken proactive steps to address the issue of balcony accidents, which have become increasingly prevalent in the region. Recognizing the gravity of these incidents, which often result in falls, fires, and other dangerous situations, the authority has identified a set of preventive measures aimed at mitigating such risks. These measures are crucial for ensuring the safety and well-being of residents, particularly during the summer months when balcony-related accidents tend to occur more frequently.

Sharjah's Preventive Measures

Among the key preventive measures outlined by the authority is the prohibition of storing items on balconies and refraining from placing furniture or other objects that could pose a hazard. Additionally, the authority stresses the importance of keeping balcony doors closed and securely locked at all times, while also recommending the installation of plastic barriers on balcony fences to prevent falls or other accidents. Furthermore, residents are urged to avoid hanging laundry on balconies and refrain from disposing of cigarette butts, charcoal, or other waste in these areas.

In conjunction with these efforts, the Sharjah Civil Defense Authority has issued directives specifically aimed at protecting children from balcony accidents, particularly during periods of heightened risk, such as vacation periods. These directives include never leaving children unattended in the house or on the balcony, installing acrylic barriers on balconies with municipal permission, and ensuring that balcony doors remain closed except when necessary. Additionally, it is advised to secure windows and balcony doors with proper locks and to keep furniture away from these areas to prevent children from climbing or accessing them unsafely.

To further raise awareness and promote safety measures, the Child Safety Department has initiated a series of field visits to residential towers and buildings throughout Sharjah. Through its "Warning against the dangers of falling from balconies" initiative, the department aims to educate residents about the potential risks associated with balconies and provide practical advice and guidance on how to prevent accidents. Parents are encouraged to adopt additional precautionary measures to protect their children from harm, and collaboration with relevant institutions is encouraged to implement best practices and standards in this regard.

The significance of these preventive measures cannot be overstated, particularly in light of the alarming statistics surrounding balcony accidents. Falls from height are the second leading cause of unintentional deaths globally, with children being particularly vulnerable to such risks, according to the World Health Organization. By implementing these proactive measures and raising awareness within the community, authorities in Sharjah are taking decisive action to safeguard the lives and well-being of residents, especially children, from the dangers posed by balcony accidents.
