Nominations can be filed in person at any of nine registration locations through Friday.

On the FNC's first day of operation, 68 applications were submitted in Abu Dhabi, 23 in Dubai, 29 in Sharjah, 12 in Ajman, 12 in Umm Al Quwain, 9 in Fujairah, and 9 in Ras Al Khaimah.

The FNC's purposes are the same as those of the Senate, the UAE's consultative parliament: to oversee government action in the Emirates, hold ministers accountable, and give the public a voice.

Each of the seven emirates is represented on the council, and its members speak on key regional issues on behalf of their people.

How does the nomination process work?

There are criteria that would need to be met by anyone hoping to join the council.

Those seeking election must be Emirati citizens and long-term residents of the emirate they hope to serve.

To be eligible for nomination, they must turn 25 before the deadline.

Nominees must also have impeccable reputations and be completely crime-free, with the exception of "those whose reputations have been restored in the eyes of the law."

Nomination requests from those whose names appear on electoral entity lists can be sent to the committee through their website at www.uaenec.ae.

Registration can also be done via the National Election Committee - uaenec app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or the Google Play Store.

The deadline to submit nominations is this Friday at 4 p.m., after a period that began on Monday at 8 a.m. Nomination requests may also be submitted to registration centres around this time.

The initial signup cost is Dh3,000.

On Friday, August 25, the preliminary list of candidates will be announced, and on Saturday, September 2, the final list will be released.
