Dubai to Introduce Nol Card-Free Metro Travel, Car Ownership Transfers via App

Asma Ahmed - | UAE

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai is getting ready to introduce a new method of fare collection, which would result in a significant change to the city's public transportation system.

Embracing Smart Transportation Innovations in Dubai

Commuters may soon be able to travel on Dubai Metro, trams, buses, taxis, and marine transport without the need for physical tickets, Nol cards, or credit cards. The RTA has unveiled a groundbreaking smart gate that leverages facial recognition technology, providing a seamless and convenient journey for passengers.

Facial Recognition for Effortless Travel

To use this innovative system, passengers need to register first. Once registered, the smart gate employs a 3D camera to analyze and recognize the faces of commuters. The passengers' biometric data is then verified, and the fare is automatically deducted from their accounts. This technology aims to simplify the payment process for public transportation, making it more convenient for passengers in Dubai.

Presenting smart projects at Gitex Global

The RTA is set to showcase various smart projects at Gitex Global, the world's largest technology and startup exhibition held at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Among these innovations, the facial recognition-based payment system is expected to be a game-changer for Dubai's public transport system.

Transfer Car Ownership via Mobile App

In addition to the smart gate, the RTA will introduce a service allowing the transfer of vehicle number plate ownership via its Dubai Drive app. This service enables customers to complete sale procedures digitally using the 'UAE PASS' digital ID, eliminating the need to visit an RTA service center. All sale contracts will be signed digitally, streamlining the vehicle ownership transfer process.

Smarter parking solutions

The RTA intends to utilize AI and large data sets to forecast parking needs. The AI model will analyze 600,000 parking inspections and about 2.5 million parking reservation transactions. Using this information, it is possible to foresee parking lot occupancy rates for each hour up to two weeks in advance. This novel method provides drivers with up-to-the-minute data about parking availability via RTA smartphones, allowing them to better plan their routes.

The World's First 3D-Printed Abra

The RTA will also unveil a model of the world's first 3D-printed abra, a traditional wooden boat used for transporting passengers across Dubai's waterways. This electric abra can carry up to 20 passengers and combines traditional design with modern features, showcasing the integration of innovative technology with traditional transport methods.

Revamped Mobile App

Additionally, the RTA has revamped its mobile app, focusing on an enhanced user interface that leverages data and AI technologies in its development. The redesigned app aims to provide a more user-friendly and efficient experience for customers.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, emphasized the organization's commitment to harnessing emerging technologies and AI to boost productivity, elevate operational efficiency, and enhance customer services, reflecting Dubai's dedication to smart transportation solutions.
