The emirates imposes fines and imprisonment for driving without a license
The UAE Traffic Law requires citizens and expatriates to follow and not violate its legal regulations. What are the penalties for driving without a license in the UAE for expats? Is it legal for a foreigner to drive in the UAE with a foreign license?
Expats face a fine if they drive without a license in the UAE
For the vehicles they drive in the UAE, expatriates must get a driving license. If they have a foreign driving license, they must replace it with an Emirati license in compliance with the UAE Traffic Law, which includes the following conditions:
- He must reach the appropriate driving age for the vehicle for which he intends to receive a driver's license.
- To be in good health.
- Unless he is one of the countries exempted, he must pass both the practical and theoretical driving tests in the Emirates.
As a result, once the expatriate gains residency in the UAE, he will be subject to UAE traffic legislation.
As a result, he is driving the vehicle without a license, or his license does not allow him to drive the same vehicle that he was driving.
The penalty is three months in prison and a fine of not less than 5,000 UAE dirhams, or one of these two penalties.

The penalty for driving without a license
The UAE Traffic Law penalizes anyone who drives a car without a license. Imprisonment for no more than one month and a fine ranging from 200 to 500 dirhams, or one of these two penalties.
